Hug the edges early
Running the perimeter keeps the middle open. Cutting through the centre feels faster and costs you the space you will need once the tail is long.
Never enter a space you cannot leave
Before you turn into a gap, check there is a way out the other side. Almost every late-game death is a pocket the player made themselves.
Follow your own tail
The safest place to be is directly behind yourself, because that space is guaranteed to clear. When the board gets tight, trail the tail and wait for room.

From the arena's seed, so the pellet sequence is the same for every player in the match. Two players who steered identically would finish with identical scores.
Is there a maximum length?
Practically, the board is the limit — the run ends when there is nowhere left to go. Getting there is a planning problem, not a reflex one.
