How a round works

Keep the surface flat
Every hole you bury costs you more later than the row you saved now. Flat boards accept any piece; jagged boards only accept the one you do not have.

Deciding where the current piece goes without looking at what is next is how good players lose to average ones. Place for the pair, not the piece.
Take the single clear
Holding a well open for a big multi-row clear is worth it only while the stack is low. Once you are halfway up, survival scores more than ambition.
